GMO Soy Growers commit Massacre in Paraguay
PARAGUAY (24/06/2005) - Brazilian growers of genetically modified (GMO) soy, under the protection of police and paramilitary forces, have attacked a peasant community, TEKOJOJA, in Caaguazu. They have evicted 270 people, arrested 130, burned their crops and bulldozed all 54 of their homes. Angel Cristaldo (20 years old) and Leopoldo Torres (49 years old) were both shot and killed by hired gunmen.

Durante los años 2003 y 2004 las empresas transnacionales dedicadas al negocio de granos y tecnología agrícola desarrollaron una estrategia de cooptación de ongs. ambientalistas y organizaciones de pequeños productores para “legitimar” la futura producción de soja que, según ellos, el mundo globalizado necesitará y que se estima aumentara en un 60%. Esta tarea de legitimación comenzó con la primera Mesa redonda de Soja Sustentable en 17 y 18 de marzo de 2005. In the morning of March 16, a group of 25 activist had a go at animal feed company Provimi in the Rotterdam Harbour. Provimi, a world leader in animal feed business, is also a major consumer of soy from South America. The action was organised on the first day of the 'Iguazu Counter Conference' against the greenwashing of the soy industry, organised by Via Campesina Argentina and GRR (Grupo de Reflexion Rural). The activists wanted to point out the role of the North, again exploiting South America's natural resources and people.

Boerenbewegingen en andere maatschappelijke groeperingen uit Brazilie en Argentinie mobiliseren tegen het plan van het Wereldnatuurfonds (WNF) voor een Rondetafel van bedrijven over duurzame soja. Deze "Business Round Table" heeft veel wantrouwen en oppositie in Zuid Amerika losgemaakt. In het plan worden agricultureelsystemen, die zich puur richten op exportproductie, niet ter discussie gesteld. Deze agriculturele systemen dienen enkel om de mondiale markt te voorzien van goedkope soja, en om aan het geld te komen waarmee het IMF-leningen terugbetaald kunnen worden, in plaats van mensen te voeden. Gobierno brasileño libera soja transgénica por un año más
Por tercera vez, el gobierno federal brasileño liberó la plantación de soja transgénica, que ya ocupa el 22,4% de la producción del género en Brasil. La Medida Provisional (MP) 223 fue sancionada el día 12 de enero y publicada en el Diario Oficial de la Unión el día 13. La misma reglamenta la plantación y comercialización de la soja genéticamente modificada entre el 31 de diciembre de 2004 y el 31 de enero de 2006. Este plazo puede prorrogarse por hasta 180 días. Al no conseguir que se aprobara el proyecto de ley sobre bioseguridad en el Congreso, el gobierno federal recurrió nuevamente a la Medida Provisional. En 2002 y 2003, presionado por los grandes proprietarios de tierra, por las empresas Monsanto y Bunge y por la bancada ruralista en el Congreso, el gobierno editó las MP 113 y 131, con el pretexto de no desperdiciar la soja transgénica contrabandeada. La MP 223 no exige la realización de un estudio de impacto ambiental para averiguar los posibles riesgos para la salud y el medio ambiente. El texto también retira la responsabilidad a las empresas que producen la soja genéticamente modificada, obligando apenas a productores y productoras a firmar los Términos de Compromiso, Responsabilidad y Ajustamiento de la Conducta. Van 31 Augustus tot 2 September wordt onder de cynische naam 'Round Table on Responsible Soy' door NGOs en bedrijfsleven gepraat over de aan de sojateelt gerelateerde problemen. Het uitgangspunt van de betrokken bedrijven is toch vooral om door te gaan met de huidige productie van soja en het areaal liefst nog te vergroten. Daarom is er een tegentop en zijn er acties.
